# Math Symbols

"Percent" is spelled out.

Exception: "%" is used in tabular matter and confined spaces.

The copy editor must draw the typesetter's attention to all mathematical symbols.

(12 x 5) ÷ 6 = 10[TYPE: math]

In measures of angles, the symbol for degree (°) is not separated from the numeral.

In measures of temperature, when the unit of measure is implicit, the symbol for degree (°) is not separated from the numeral.

In measures of temperature, when the unit of measure is explicit, the symbol for degree (°) is separated from the numeral by a space and is followed immediately by the abbreviated unit of measure.

it was 30 °C today

bake at 300 °F

Symbols for feet and inches and for degrees and minutes (′ and ″) are represented in manuscript by single and double quotation marks, and are not separated from the numeral. The copy editor must mark these symbols as characters to be distinguished from regular single and double quotation marks.
